Remake a “Hara Obi” to upper garment for babies’ Hakama coodination
We received an enquiry from a customer asking if we could make a baby’s “kimono” and “hakama” using a “Hara Obi”, which could be worn for visiting the shrine or celebrating the first meal ceremony.
At first, I made a prototype. The customer was pleased with it, so we decided to make it while discussing the Japanese pattern, colour of the layered collar and the “Obi”.
The Japanese pattern of the “Hakama” is a cherry blossom pattern, the overlaid collar and the “obi” are plain red, and the ribbon of the “Hakama” is also plain red to match the “Obi”.
The first step in making the upper garment is to keep the “Hara Obi” and thread it through the water. The one I kept this time was unbleached and soft to the touch. There is the red seal of the shrine where the customer went to pray for a safe delivery. After asking the request of the customer, the seal was turned sideways, but it was tailored so that it can be seen inward.
The “Hakama” was made like balloon pants with rubber bands at the hem. It’s also nice to pull out the rubber bands when the child is able to stand and walk. By that time, the shoulders of the upper garment can be extended as the child growth.
This time, with a sense of celebration, I wrapped them with the Sincero’s “Furoshiki” and a “Mizuhiki” plum knot.
I was contacted with a very cute photo that they were able to finish the celebration of the first visit to the shrine and the first weaning ceremony. Even cuter with clog-patterned socks that match the colour perfectly! Thank you so much for coordinating cutely.
The customer also ordered handkerchief sets to convey gratitude to the parents of both families who gathered to celebrate the baby. The pattern and colour were selected by considering the age and image of the person who use them. The kindness of the customer was very well conveyed.
My heart is at peace knowing that the baby is happy to be looked after by such a kind mother.
